Mandla Mlangeni is a trumpeter, composer and bandleader based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
A Standard Bank Young Artist For Jazz 2019 award winner, Mr Mlangeni who picked up a trumpet at an age of 14 and never had “being a musician” at his plans list as he was not aware that vocation could be of service as he was once a farmer, teacher and chef. Seems like we have a man of many talents here…
Mr Mlangeni started following her skill in music after he was inspired by the passion of Innocent Ngwane from Soweto, that’s when he also started attending music school.
Mlangeni is founding member of Amandla Freedom Ensemble (Bhekisizwe 2016 SAMA nominated Best Jazz Album and Born To Be Black: A Celebration Of The Conscious Soul). Mlangeni’s other outfit aptly named the Tune Recreation Committee (TRC) listed as New York Times’ Best Albums for 2017 and made their debut appearance at the 2017 Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
Mlangeni has performed and collaborated with several distinguished jazz musicians such as both locally and abroad including but not limited to David Murray, Evan Parker, Feya Faku, Louis Moholo, Shabaka Hutchings (UK), Ganesh Geymeier (CH), Barney Rachabane, Hotsix Mabuse, Hugh Masekela, Khaya Mahlangu, Andile Yenana and Afrika Mkhize, to name a few. Mlangeni has curated several other initiatives in Johannesburg and Cape Town such as the Afrikan Freedom Principle and a host of other.
About The Event
Mlangeni’s short visit is to reacquaint with the local scene of younger musicians and happenings.This outing will be a fresh take on his music while bringing together a cutting-edge combo of the Cape’s finest musicians in the form of Ndumiso Nxele on drums, Nicholas Williams on bass, Siya Charles on trombone and Thembelihle Dunjana on piano. He will be bringing all these good sounds coming from individual at Selective Live in Cape Town.
