Carla Stokes as a saxophonist
Carla Stokes is a freelancer tenor saxophonist and clarinetist, born and bred in Cape Town, South Africa. She is a graduate of UCT’s South African College of Music. She has been a trained musician her entire life since starting at age of eight, she started learning music formally at school studying classical piano and clarinet.
Carla has been gigging professionally since age 15 in various band set-ups and has performed in many big bands, to Jazz, Rock and Pop bands, and currently gigs around town with her own bands on a regular basis.
Stokes music influences are John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Candy Dulfer, Melissa Aldana, Miles Davis, Bob Mintzer, Chad LB, Rachel K Collier, Bad Snacks, Esperanza Spalding, Tom Misch and Anat Cohen. She’s influenced by the year of 2000 and in the Western Country by Jazz music genre.
Her genre is based on Jazz, Pop, R&B and Soul and she obviously uses saxophone. Her accomplishments include a BMus degree in Jazz performance at the University of Cape Town college of music, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Music.
