SUMMARY:Matti Klein soul trio
DESCRIPTION:The Berlin-based trio have now played well over 200 concerts all over the world\, including performances at the Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival in Haiti\, Pori Jazz in Finland and on a UK tour. Matti Klein’s compositions enable the trio’s capability to captivate and delight an audience almost instantly. On the one hand\, the songs give space for the band’s improvisations full of passion and humour. On the other hand\, they are based on highly personal experiences that are transformed into detailed musical narratives – vibrant soul jazz and instrumental funk of The Meters or The Crusaders sit organically alongside hiphop elements or spacey post-rock. Every note emphasises how much Klein is passionate about creating a soulful connection with his audience. \n\n\n\nB A N D M E M B E R S: \n\n\n\nMATTI KLEIN – Wurlitzer Piano and Fender Bass Rhodes @mattikleinmusic LARS ZANDER – bass clarinet and tenor saxophone. SUMMARY:Madala Kunene at Selective Live
DESCRIPTION:Affectionately known as Madala Kunene\, a world-renowned guitarist\, he was recognised by the University for his outstanding contribution to the South African music industry. He decided he wanted to be a musician early in life and fashioned his own guitar from a cooking oil tin and strings made from fishing line. \n\n\n\nIn his acceptance address presented in isiZulu\, Kunene expressed gratitude to the University for his musical recognition. He also took to the stage to perform one of his songs that had audiences enthralled. Kunene reflected on his humble beginnings playing the guitar with friends in Mkhumbane\, Durban\, in the 1950s. Despite the challenges they faced as artists\, including poverty and oppression\, they persevered and contributed to South African music. \n\n\n\nKunene encouraged graduates to pursue their dreams\, despite obstacles\, and to make meaningful contributions to society. He said\, ‘As your journey starts today\, it is important to know who you are\, and to truly follow what is your gift. We are not only studying for ourselves\, but we are studying to improve society. \n\n\n\nTurning professional in the 1970s\, Kunene has shared the stage with great musicians including Doc Mthalane\, Songamasu\, Shor Philips\, Mankunku Ngozi and Busi Mhlongo. \n\n\n\nKunene started recording music in the 1990s and in 1995 released an album Madamax with Swiss guitarist and songwriter Max Lasser. He later released King of the Zulu Guitar – Vol. 1\, which sold well overseas and was a SAMA-nominated album. \n\n\n\nIn 2004\, he composed the score for the feature film Yesterday\, while in 2014\, he collaborated with various local and international artists to produce: Madala Kunene – BAFO the Mentor\, The Forest Jam Sessions\, Vol. 3. \n\n\n\nReleased in 2015\, the album 1959\, featured musical giants including Lu Dlamini\, Hugh Masekela\, Sthembiso Hlela\, Max Lasser\, Vishen Kemraj\, Sazi Dlamini. \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to host a musical celebration of Dr Madala Kunene in acknowledging this historic occasion\, his long and invaluable association with UKZN\, and his central role as a musician and cultural icon in our community. Dr Madala Kunene will be joined by Lu Dlamini\, Vishen Kemraj and Bab Themba Mokoena.

SUMMARY:Still standing album launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Veteran hip hoppers and long-time collaborators DJ Eazy and Jerome Rex are celebrating the release of their first album as a duo. \n\n\n\nThe project is part compilation (all the songs they’ve previously appeared on together are finally on one album) while the other half is made up of all new music. Jerome is the emcee laying down the raps and Eazy touches every track either through his music production or turntablism skills. \n\n\n\nThe sound is contemporary classicist hip hop in the style of groups like Little Brother and Grxwn Fxlks\, with strong influences of early Cape Town hip hop groups like Black Noise and Prophets of da City. \n\n\n\nBorn from the uncertainty of the pandemic lockdown\, Still Standing is a statement of defiance and a declaration of intent – we’ve survived and we’re not going anywhere. \n\n\n\nThis release party is led by DJ Eazy and Jerome Rex\, and backed by a four-piece band: Michael Thompson on keys and talkbox\, Bradrock on drums\, Eddy Strings on guitar and Robin Thompson on bass guitar.
