SUMMARY:Bheki Khoza
DESCRIPTION:Bheki Khoza is the well-known left handed guitarist from Umlazi\, Durban\, South Africa. In 1991 he received a Talent Award and scholarship to study music in America. He returned in 1995 from studying at the University of Hartford\, Connecticut\, with the great Jackie McClean\, on of the few living legends. \n\n\n\nSome of the musicians he held the opportunity to play with included Kenny Barron\, Hilton Ruiz\, Kirk Ligtsey\, Cecil McBee\, Virgil Jones\, Charlces Davis and Steve Davis\, who now Anarchy\, a jam club for African music\, in particular. Gigs stemming from the African connection included backing vocalist FLoxy Bee from Nigeria and Thuli Dumakude\, a singer from South Africa\, of Mabatha Fame. \n\n\n\nPrior to studying in America\, Bheki played with the African Jazz Pioneers\, Abie Cindi\, Sipho Gumede\, Winston Mankunku Ngozi\, Rene McClean\, Victor Ntoni\, Mike Makhalemala\, George Lee\, and Berry Rachabane\, among others. He also backed South Africa’s famous songbirds\, Sibongile Khumalo\, Sophic Mgina\, Dolly Rathebe\, Abigail Kubheka\, and Themi Mtshani. During this time Bheki also had his own band Thayima\, which played jazz and African music directly addressing the social conditions of the late 1980’s for this reason the band was never recorded. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6pm and show starts at 8pm.

DESCRIPTION:KwaNongoma: Linda Sikhakhane & Paras “Sibalukhulu” Dlamini \n\n\n\nKwaNongoma is a collaborative project between saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane and vocalist Paras “Sibalukhulu” Dlamini. This project seeks to open a sonic discourse on questions of song\, belonging and collective memory towards igniting societal values through song (ingoma). \n\n\n\nKwaNongoma will draw its repertoires from two recently released albums by these longtime collaborators: Ingoma Busuku (2025) and iLadi (2024). Consequently\, the bandstand on the evening will open space for reinforcing shared understandings and commemorative forms of communal practices. \n\n\n\nTenor: Linda Sikhakhane \n\n\n\nVocal: Paras “Sibalukhulu” Dlamini \n\n\n\nDouble Bass: Dalisu Ndlazi \n\n\n\nDrums: Damian Kemineth \n\n\n\nSpecial guest: \n\n\n\nCameron Ward \n\n\n\n“Through his searching\, saxophonist\, composer and Blue Note artist Linda Sikhakhane \n\n\n\nepitomises the vibrant evolution of South Africa’s jazz landscape. The Umlazi-born and \n\n\n\nKwaNongoma descendant musician establishes a conversation between the contemporary \n\n\n\nand traditional\, homegrown and global while steeping his ruminations on the personal\, \n\n\n\nsocietal\, spiritual and cultural in rich tones. Owing inspiration to greats such as John \n\n\n\nColtrane\, Bheki Mseleku\, Winston Mankunku Ngozi\, Nduduzo Makhathini\, \n\n\n\nSikhakhane’s style is informed by the interplay between the metropolitan and the folkloric. \n\n\n\nHis offerings deftly align these sonic influences with theoretical concepts drawn from both \n\n\n\nhereditary customs and academic abstraction” \n\n\n\n“Siphamandla Dlamini better known as ‘Paras Sibalukhulu \n\n\n\n‘’Dlamini’ in the music scene\, born and raised in kwamashu and ulundi finished his \n\n\n\nsecondary schooling at Masibumbane High school\, uLundi. SUMMARY:Joliza Bhacasoul at Selective Live
DESCRIPTION:Thandikhaya Magayiyana\, stage name Joliza Bhacasoul\, born on the 30th August 1991 in Gqeberha is a singer-songwriter with \n\n\n\nstrong family roots from Emawusheni Village KwaBhaca\, formerly known as Mount Frere in the Old Transkei Homeland. He \n\n\n\nhas spent years honing his craft to produce his Bhacasoul sound which integrates his Bhaca heritage sounds\, igwijo and \n\n\n\ncontemporary musical elements. He started experimenting with music in 2005 and since then he has been composing and \n\n\n\nindependently releasing his own music from locally produced singles\, EPs and albums some of which has been played on \n\n\n\nnational radio stations such as Radio 2000\, Umhlobo Wenene FM and TruFM and on local radio stations like KQFM and \n\n\n\nBayFM.. Joliza released his first commercial project titled“Bhacasoul Experience” on the 5th of May 2023. A 5– song EP \n\n\n\ndistributed through Platoon. Although his music reflects some elements of Afro soul\, jazz and maskandi\, Joliza calls his music \n\n\n\nBhaca soul music\, a genre which leans more on traditional Bhaca rhythm elements of“ukucwiya” (spiritual singing)\,“ukuvalela” \n\n\n\n(spiritual humming) and“ukusina” (spiritual dancing).

The album featured likes of PRO\, K.O\, J.R and Bricks\, Jack Parrow\, Stan1 and \n\n\n\nGerman DJ Leo Large. He Produced 80% of the tracks in the album including the smash hit \n\n\n\n“Shikisha”. Not only is Red Button a talented rapper he has a gift of producing hits. He produced \n\n\n\nthe smash hit “Makasana”\, for his mentor Pro and was subsequently nominated for Producer of the \n\n\n\nyear in 2012 at the South African Hip Hop Awards. He also produced other hit single for other \n\n\n\nindustry heavy weights like\, Dj Dimplez\, Dj Sabby\, Dj Capital\, Ntukza (Teargas) and Zakwe. Her early career saw her honing her skills as a backup vocalist\, but in 2016 she stepped into the spotlight as a band leader\, a move that quickly garnered attention. \n\n\n\nShe was selected as a featured performer at the inaugural Nelson Mandela Arts Festival and the Mamela Festival for two consecutive years. Andy’s breakout moment came with her acclaimed debut at the 2018 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown\, where she earned a Standard Bank Ovation Award. This was followed by the release of her debut single\, “Nomalanga Pamunotangira\,” a collaboration with bassist and producer Edgar Muzah. Together with a team of talented artists from the Eastern Cape and Zimbabwe\, the group was awarded the ESP Young Legends title\, securing a performance slot at the renowned Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2019. \n\n\n\nHer songwriting talent is also featured on Edgar Muzah’s SAMA28-nominated album\, “Son of a Tribe.” Expanding her creative reach\, Andy ventured into live production\, directing and presenting “INTLOMBE\,” which earned a Standard Bank Bronze Ovation Award. An open-mic poetry event centred around pleasure\, love in all its passionate and platonic forms\, sexual education and healing through poetic expression. \n\n\n\nThe event will welcome open-mic poets to the stage\, incorporate elements of sexual education & poetry from Amir herself\, and raise funds for the CORA Project: an NGO whose objective is to fight period poetry in South Africa. It is also a pad drive\, so please bring sanitary donations! \n\n\n\nThis is a collaboration in two parts: \n\n\n\nA guided writing and pleasure education workshop (and wonderful way to prepare for the open-mic) hosted by Amir will take place on Saturday the 9th of August from 4-6:30pm at Artiste.
