DESCRIPTION:Zenzele Mthembu-Salter is a bass player and composer based in Amsterdam. Zenzele has been living in the Netherlands for the past two years\, honing his craft studying jazz bass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He has been making a name for himself in the improv scene in Europe. As well as forming a South African group called ‘Sofaya’ based in Amsterdam\, Zenzele has been touring around Europe with various projects\, including with the likes of Kyle Shepherd. \n\n\n\nNow returning to his home town Cape Town\, Zenzele will perform a selection of his own compositions accompanied by a star studded band. He is joined by his brother Khaya Mthembu-Salter on guitar. Taking influence from the current European improv scene\, the music is a blend of Contemporary Jazz and African inspired grooves\, like Maskandi\, Kwela\, Hip-Hop. Zenzele’s roots are in African and Gospel music\, but being schooled in Jazz from a young age\, Zen seeks to blend his love for jazz with his African roots through his compositions. DESCRIPTION:Nasim Siddeeq\, born in the Bronx\, raised in the town of Wawayanda\, is a singer\, songwriter\, guitarist and producer. His grandma\, Phyllis Greene\, discovered him at the early age of 4 while singing “O Happy Day” in the bathtub. She heard him from downstairs and encouraged him to continue singing. He has been singing ever since! When Nasim picked up the guitar in 2014 his career began to take off in an entirely new light. \n\n\n\nSince 2022\, Nasim Siddeeq has been a solo guitarist and vocalist for Disney Cruise Line\, but let us tell you more about the journey! \n\n\n\nNasim graduated from S.U.N.Y Albany and then taught six years of high school Spanish in the greater Washington D.C. area. He left his career to pursue music full time back home in New York following the 2016-2017 school year. He felt it was time to take the leap of faith and put all of his time in his God given talent. Right away\, Nasim began singing on the streets and subways of N.Y.C. to try and find more opportunities to do what he loves most. After singing with his guitar on 125th Street for a few hours\, it came to pass that he was in the right place at the right time. \n\n\n\nApril 2018\, Nasim performed on “Amateur Night at the Apollo” in Harlem\, NY! While living in Washington D.C. Nasim performed at the Kennedy Center and was featured on National Television with WUSA9! He has been doing the Sunday brunch performance at the Olde Towne Inn\, in Largo Maryland for over a year. Nasim has performed at many different venues all throughout Washington D.C.\, Maryland\, and Virginia. Upon releasing his CD\, Nasim had a sold out show at Acre121 in D.C. \n\n\n\nOn April 22nd 2017 Nasim released his first original album\, “Singing for my Life”. It contains all live instrumentation and original lyrics. This album has already sold tons of copies and reached fans all over the world including Japan\, Korea\, Nigeria\, Kenya and Australia. DESCRIPTION:Affectionately known as Madala Kunene\, a world-renowned guitarist\, he was recognised by the University for his outstanding contribution to the South African music industry. He decided he wanted to be a musician early in life and fashioned his own guitar from a cooking oil tin and strings made from fishing line. \n\n\n\nIn his acceptance address presented in isiZulu\, Kunene expressed gratitude to the University for his musical recognition. He also took to the stage to perform one of his songs that had audiences enthralled. Kunene reflected on his humble beginnings playing the guitar with friends in Mkhumbane\, Durban\, in the 1950s. Despite the challenges they faced as artists\, including poverty and oppression\, they persevered and contributed to South African music. \n\n\n\nKunene encouraged graduates to pursue their dreams\, despite obstacles\, and to make meaningful contributions to society. He said\, ‘As your journey starts today\, it is important to know who you are\, and to truly follow what is your gift. We are not only studying for ourselves\, but we are studying to improve society. \n\n\n\nTurning professional in the 1970s\, Kunene has shared the stage with great musicians including Doc Mthalane\, Songamasu\, Shor Philips\, Mankunku Ngozi and Busi Mhlongo. \n\n\n\nKunene started recording music in the 1990s and in 1995 released an album Madamax with Swiss guitarist and songwriter Max Lasser. He later released King of the Zulu Guitar – Vol. 1\, which sold well overseas and was a SAMA-nominated album. \n\n\n\nIn 2004\, he composed the score for the feature film Yesterday\, while in 2014\, he collaborated with various local and international artists to produce: Madala Kunene – BAFO the Mentor\, The Forest Jam Sessions\, Vol. 3. \n\n\n\nReleased in 2015\, the album 1959\, featured musical giants including Lu Dlamini\, Hugh Masekela\, Sthembiso Hlela\, Max Lasser\, Vishen Kemraj\, Sazi Dlamini. \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to host a musical celebration of Dr Madala Kunene in acknowledging this historic occasion\, his long and invaluable association with UKZN\, and his central role as a musician and cultural icon in our community. Dr Madala Kunene will be joined by Lu Dlamini\, Vishen Kemraj and Bab Themba Mokoena.

SUMMARY:Bheki Khoza trio
DESCRIPTION:Bheki Khoza is the well-known left handed guitarist from Umlazi\, Durban\, South Africa. In 1991 he received a Talent Award and scholarship to study music in America. He returned in 1995 from studying at the University of Hartford\, Connecticut\, with the great Jackie McClean\, on of the few living legends. \n\n\n\nSome of the musicians he held the opportunity to play with included Kenny Barron\, Hilton Ruiz\, Kirk Ligtsey\, Cecil McBee\, Virgil Jones\, Charlces Davis and Steve Davis\, who now Anarchy\, a jam club for African music\, in particular. Gigs stemming from the African connection included backing vocalist FLoxy Bee from Nigeria and Thuli Dumakude\, a singer from South Africa\, of Mabatha Fame. \n\n\n\nPrior to studying in America\, Bheki played with the African Jazz Pioneers\, Abie Cindi\, Sipho Gumede\, Winston Mankunku Ngozi\, Rene McClean\, Victor Ntoni\, Mike Makhalemala\, George Lee\, and Berry Rachabane\, among others. He also backed South Africa’s famous songbirds\, Sibongile Khumalo\, Sophic Mgina\, Dolly Rathebe\, Abigail Kubheka\, and Themi Mtshani. During this time Bheki also had his own band Thayima\, which played jazz and African music directly addressing the social conditions of the late 1980’s for this reason the band was never recorded. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6pm and show starts at 8pm
