DESCRIPTION:Kunene started recording music in the 1990s and in 1995 released an album Madamax with Swiss guitarist and songwriter Max Lasser. He later released King of the Zulu Guitar – Vol. 1\, which sold well overseas and was a SAMA-nominated album. \n\n\n\nIn 2004\, he composed the score for the feature film Yesterday\, while in 2014\, he collaborated with various local and international artists to produce: Madala Kunene – BAFO the Mentor\, The Forest Jam Sessions\, Vol. 3. \n\n\n\nReleased in 2015\, the album 1959\, featured musical giants including Lu Dlamini\, Hugh Masekela\, Sthembiso Hlela\, Max Lasser\, Vishen Kemraj\, Sazi Dlamini. \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to host a musical celebration of Dr Madala Kunene in acknowledging this historic occasion\, his long and invaluable association with UKZN\, and his central role as a musician and cultural icon in our community. Dr Madala Kunene will be joined by Lu Dlamini\, Vishen Kemraj and Bab Themba Mokoena.

DESCRIPTION:Ashè are a quartet based in Cape Town. The band writes and performs original \n\n\n\nmusic that is unique and takes influence from local sounds like Goema and jazz \n\n\n\nand fuses it with Afrobeat\, funk and dub. The music is groove based and \n\n\n\nsoulful with strong melodies and improvisation.  \n\n\n\nThe band members are all \n\n\n\nseasoned musicians who have played on stages around Southern Africa and \n\n\n\nEurope. \n\n\n\nBrandon ‘B-RAE’ Ruiters is a classically trained graduate from \n\n\n\nUCT’s college of music and gained a lot of his experience from his church \n\n\n\nwhere he developed his love for music. Brandon has shared the stage with \n\n\n\nartists such as Jimmy Dludlu\, Jonathan Butler\, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra\, \n\n\n\nMike Campbell Big Band\, Emo Adams and many more. \n\n\n\nBrandon is a versatile trumpet player with a unique approach to sound. His \n\n\n\ninnovation makes him stand out as he also incorporates effects pedals into his \n\n\n\nplaying which has given him a reputation as a “one man horn section” \n\n\n\n. \n\n\n\nDan Boshoff has played guitar in many projects and across Southern Africa and shared \n\n\n\nthe stage with many great artists. Previous projects include Alanfunk\, Black South \n\n\n\nEaster and AshweetA. Dan incorporates unusual tunings and effects to create a unique \n\n\n\nsound. \n\n\n\nWayde Hardy plays hybrid percussion and brings a fresh and upbeat energy that he \n\n\n\nhas honed from years of playing with a range of projects including Mae Sithole and \n\n\n\nJonty Hendrix. \n\n\n\nAdam Selikowitz is a new addition to the Cape Town scene and is fast making a name \n\n\n\nfor himself with his virtuoso performances and nuanced style. DESCRIPTION:Black Perils of the Last Days \n\n\n\nWhat becomes of this much anti-Blackness? Why are we so easy to show hate and violence towards one another? What is it about the Black body that attracts violation – which goes without any repercussions? \n\n\n\nThis is a lamentation based on such questions and more. We exist in a world where violence outbreaks at any point and we watch and continue living. Why are we not doing much? This is a call to rethink our actions. \n\n\n\nAs part of his performance series towards the release of his album next year\, Kitso Seti presents BLACK PERILS OF THE LAST DAYS alongside Enkosi Simelane. His last performance was IMBUMBA YAMANYAMA with iNdlulamthi at Selective Live. He is bringing a number of his companions as he wishes to “sing ’til we drive those sorrows away”. She describes it as a continuation of her curated prayers to the gifters of song\, believing deeply that she is a messenger of these sacred melodies. \n\n\n\nThis March\, Buhlebendalo returns to the Selective live stage—her home away from home. Her Cape Town band\, featuring the incredible Khaya Njikelana on drums\, Inganam Batala on keys\, Grant Allison on bass\, and the talented Bvs Sia Mzizi and Koketso Langa\, will join her for a powerful live performance. \n\n\n\nCome immerse yourself in the sounds of Hele\, as Buhlebendalo takes us on a journey through both her album and the prayers behind it. \n\n\n\nOdwa Bongo will be an opening act for Buhle so dont forget. \n\n\n\nOdwa Bongo is a South African contemporary uHadi instrumentalist and vocalist. His sound is influenced by Simphiwe Dana’s vocal style & raw traditional isiXhosa music. In 2012\, the Drakensberg Boys Choir alumnus was announced the Standard Bank Schools Big Band vocalist at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival. His talent and love for his culture landed him a feature on SABC’s Youth Culture documentary series. Acknowledged as one of South Africa´s top LGBTQI+ creatives by Celebrity Services Africa\, Bongo collaborated with South Africa’s top artists including the late Dr. Madosini\, Camagwini\, Thandeka Mfinyongo\, Morena Leraba & Koleka Putuma. DESCRIPTION:he Congo Cowboys blend the twangy sounds of American roots music with the rich rhythms of African traditional music. The band was formed in 2016 by three members of the South African band Freshlyground: Simon Attwell (banjo)\, Julio Sigauque (bass)\, and Congolese singer Chris Bakalanga (vocals and guitar). \n\n\n\nThe band’s music draws on the foot-stomping qualities of Bluegrass and Country\, reimagined through Kwassa Kwassa African rhythms and Soukous guitar. The result is a gritty exploration of Americana and old-timey ditties\, with a distinctly African twist. \n\n\n\nThe Congo Cowboys have performed across the globe\, electrifying audiences with their foot-stomping performances.
